Narrative Analysis Essay
(Internet down, sorry for the delay)
Choose one of the following two options:
A) A key component of any story, fiction or nonfiction, is setting. What is the function of setting, namely the town of Gloucester, in The Perfect Storm? How does this tiny fishing town "come alive" in the narrative, and what role does it play? In a concise essay, examine how Sebastian Junger utilizes the town of Gloucester to tell the story of the Andrea Gail and her crew. In your analysis, consider how the book’s setting might add (or detract) from the overall narrative. Also, cite specific evidence from the book to support your thesis.
B) Despite writing about real people, even nonfiction writers must consider characterization, that process by which information is revealed about a character. In The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger strives to as accurately report about the tragedy of the Andre Gail as possible. This, presumably, includes his portrayals of Billy Tyne and his crew. But is Junger successful in this pursuit? What are the portraits that emerge of the crew? Does he manage to stay neutral in his characterizations of these men, or does he fall short? In a concise essay, examine the ways in which the crew of the Andrea Gail are characterized. In your analysis, consider both Junger's goal as a writer and the resulting characters that emerge in his book. Also, cite specific evidence from the book to support your thesis.
